8:00 am
Continental Breakfast (Beckman Institute's East Patio)
8:45 am Tutorial (Beckman Institute Auditorium)
Topics include: Foundations, math, biology, turbulence, etc.
John Doyle

The tutorial will aim to provide a common background for the main sessions and talks, both theoretical foundations and domain basics, particularly in biology, turbulence, medicine, and networking. We'll assume the attendees have a fairly standard CDS background, but might not be familiar with some of the application domains, particularly in basic sciences, and some of the newest theory developments. We'll also aim to convey what the broad lessons learned from both diverse applications and broad contact with pure and applied math. Time permitting, some important topics not in the main event will be covered, such as neuroscience and statistical physics.

12:00 pm Lunch (Beckman Institute's East Patio)
1:00 pm Tutorial continued
Topics include: CMS, networks, etc.

The afternoon will focus on the bridge between CDS and CMS and how together they provide overarching and coherent frameworks for the diverse applications, particularly in complex networks. The last session on Thursday will introduce the new CMS program. Important new opportunities for CDS/CMS are Software Defined Networking (SDN), Internet of Things (IOT) and Everything (IOE), cyberphysical systems (CPS), particularly smartgrid, and neuroscience. We'll review these motivating examples and relevant recent theoretical progress, particularly in methods from optimization, statistics, and new results in distributed control.

Workshop attendees are encouraged to "drop in" whenever they arrive, and we will aim to make the tutorial informative and entertaining for everyone. The tutorial will end well before the opening reception.
